Dental surgery often invokes fear in our patients, but many times our patients are also anxious about having to receive anesthesia for their surgery. We understand our patients’ concerns, and we know how to help overcome them. We do everything we can to ensure that you are as relaxed and as comfortable as possible, and it’s also important to us that your treatment is as painless as possible.
Our Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Billy Laun, is licensed by the state to administer general anesthesia and has had years of advanced training beyond dental school, and he provides anesthesia and sedation services to patients on a daily basis. In addition to our surgeon, our clinical staff are ACLS certified and have completed Anesthesia Sedation training, so you can receive the care you need in the comfort of our office.
This kind of sedation is taken orally, typically one hour before your visit. Many patients experience a decrease in dental anxiety and discomfort with the degree of effects depending on what medication is prescribed and at what dosage. It may take up to a few hours after the appointment for the effects to wear off, so you must have a driver present.
Administered intravenously, this “twilight sedation” puts you in a sleep-like state, though you will remain awake during your procedure. With amnesic effects, many patients who receive IV sedation may forget parts of their care or the entirety of their treatment. With some lasting effects, patients will need someone to drive them home after their visit.
For complex surgical procedures and medically compromised patients, our surgeon may recommend treatment in a hospital-based setting. Dr. Laun maintains hospital privileges at Deaconess Illinois Medical Center where anesthesia is administered by certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and anesthesiologists.

Used for the most complex or extensive dental procedures such as full mouth dental implant placement, general anesthesia is a combination of medications that renders you completely unconscious. Only specially trained practitioners like our oral surgeons can provide this level of anesthesia.
Many of the services we provide are more complex and you may need additional assistance to both feel relaxed and to provide adequate levels of pain control. With IV sedation, you will be more comfortable and able to receive the care you need to reach optimal oral health. Our sedation options often change the relationship and thought of visiting the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Carbondale to a positive experience. IV sedation specifically allows us to provide the most personalized levels of sedation, which we have full control over to ensure you are fully comfortable and relaxed throughout your entire treatment, enhancing your overall experiences with us.
